A few recent self- portraits.

Hey, I'm Theo Zeylon and I'm new on the blog-scene. Hopefully though, I will post some of my art here from time to time, along with comments on it or other art- related ramblings.
I'm going to art- school this fall, so I've been visiting a few different schools lately. The visits, the whole environment of the schools and talking to the teachers had me thinking about why I make art, the purpose for me personally. Or maybe it was just general anxiety around actually having to do something serious creatively that had me thinking about it. Or both.
Of course there are many different purposes for doing things creatively. Understanding things better, passing the time, that "great idea that you just have to do" and so on. But when it comes down to it art has to be fun or otherwise fullfilling in some unexplainable way. Inspired, for short.
So then, what is fun? Well, first of all what is fun is doing things, not thinking about them endlessly before and after you do them. Secondly, at least to me, the element of surprise or chance is pretty necessary. Those things you didn't really know how they would turn out, that have you kind of spellbound while you're doing them and surprised when you're done.
These are some thoughts that struck me, and kind of thrilled me, and that I felt I wanted to make into standards.
Here are a few self- portraits I've done during the last couple of weeks.

Oil-pastels, acrylics, pencil, Posca- markers on cardboard. 70*50 cm.

Colour markers on paper. A4- sized.

Oil pastels, pencils, black marker on paper. A4- sized.

Pencils, pastels and white pencil on paper. A4- sized.

Ballpoint pen on paper. Pretty small.

I drew that last one at work (tele- researcher), hence the despair in my eyes.
In other news, underground rapper Camu Tao passed away recently. Sad of course, but also strangely kind of a reason to get into his stuff. He was a part of the groups SA Smash, Night Hawks, and Central services along with artists Metro, Cage and El-P respectively.

That's all for now, thanks.
